ASTM D6482 — Aqueous Polymer Quenchant Testing with Agitation (Tensi Method)
The standard for evaluating aqueous polymer quenchants — the environmentally-friendly alternative to quench oil.
What is ASTM D6482?
ASTM D6482-06 — "Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Aqueous Polymer Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Tensi Method)" — evaluates the cooling performance of aqueous polymer quenchants including poly(alkylene glycol) (PAG), poly(ethyl oxazoline) (PEOx), poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA), and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP).
Aqueous polymer quenchants are increasingly replacing mineral quench oils in many industrial applications due to their fire resistance, controllable cooling rate (by adjusting concentration), lower environmental impact, and reduced maintenance burden. Unlike oils, which have fixed cooling rates, polymer quenchant behaviour changes significantly with concentration, temperature, and agitation rate — making rigorous standardised testing essential.
D6482 uses the Tensi Agitation Assembly — a purpose-built impeller system — to reproduce controlled agitation conditions. Since aqueous polymer quenching performance is highly sensitive to agitation, the standard's agitation-controlled setup provides repeatable, comparable results across labs.
Apparatus & Key Specifications
ASTM D6482 mandates the following apparatus — all requirements are met by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer platform.
Reported Parameters
ASTM D6482 requires the following parameters to be calculated and reported for each test run. ProQuench software computes all of these automatically.
Reference Fluid Limits
These acceptance limits must be met when testing the calibration reference fluid — verifying equipment and probe are within specification.
How ProVaC Enables ASTM D6482 Compliance
Every aspect of ASTM D6482 is directly addressed by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer, Inconel Probes, and ProQuench V3 software.
Polymer Quenchant Support
ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer with Tensi attachment supports D6482 testing for all common polymer quenchant types — PAG, PVP, PEOx, and PSA — at variable concentration and agitation.
Agitation Speed Control
The Tensi assembly on ProVaC's system is equipped with variable-speed impeller control (adjustable RPM) and optical tachometer verification — ensuring reproducible agitation per D6482.
Concentration Monitoring
ProQuench logs and trends cooling curves by concentration level, letting polymer quenchant users build concentration-performance charts and set automated bath-top-up triggers.
Probe Reconditioning Tracking
ProQuench maintains a full probe usage log. The system alerts operators when 200-quench or 2-year reconditioning thresholds are approaching, ensuring calibration integrity per D6482.
Same Probe — Dual Standard Ready
The Inconel probe geometry is identical to D6200/ISO 9950. Switch from oil to polymer testing by swapping the quench vessel for the Tensi assembly — no probe change needed.
