Standard Overview

What is ASTM D6200?

ASTM D6200 — "Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Quench Oils by Cooling Curve Analysis" — is the primary ASTM International standard for evaluating industrial quenching oils. It is the direct ASTM counterpart to ISO 9950:1995, employing identical probe geometry, furnace conditions, and reporting parameters.

ASTM D6200 is the most commonly cited standard in industrial procurement tenders, government GeM listings, and quality audits (particularly CQI-9 compliance). Heat treatment shops, quench oil manufacturers, automotive OEMs, and defence laboratories worldwide specify D6200 compliance for their quenchometer equipment.

The standard is maintained by ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants, and was last revised in 2021 (D6200-21), with the previous version D6200-01 remaining widely referenced.

Scope Summary

ASTM D6200 applies to the evaluation of heat-treating oils used in quenching (rapid cooling) of metals, in a non-agitated system. The standard covers:

Test Principle

An Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) probe — 12.5 mm diameter × 60 mm length — with a Type K thermocouple at its geometric centre is heated in an 850 °C furnace and then transferred into a 2000 mL sample of still quench oil. The temperature-time data is recorded digitally, and key cooling curve parameters are calculated, including Maximum Cooling Rate, Temperature at Maximum Cooling Rate, Cooling Rate at 300 °C, and cooling times to 600 °C, 400 °C, and 200 °C.
