Standard Overview

What is ASTM D6200?

ASTM D6200 — "Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Quench Oils by Cooling Curve Analysis" — is the primary ASTM International standard for evaluating industrial quenching oils. It is the direct ASTM counterpart to ISO 9950:1995, employing identical probe geometry, furnace conditions, and reporting parameters.

ASTM D6200 is the most commonly cited standard in industrial procurement tenders, government GeM listings, and quality audits (particularly CQI-9 compliance). Heat treatment shops, quench oil manufacturers, automotive OEMs, and defence laboratories worldwide specify D6200 compliance for their quenchometer equipment.

The standard is maintained by ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants, and was last revised in 2021 (D6200-21), with the previous version D6200-01 remaining widely referenced.

Scope Summary

ASTM D6200 applies to the evaluation of heat-treating oils used in quenching (rapid cooling) of metals, in a non-agitated system. The standard covers:

Test Principle

An Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) probe — 12.5 mm diameter × 60 mm length — with a Type K thermocouple at its geometric centre is heated in an 850 °C furnace and then transferred into a 2000 mL sample of still quench oil. The temperature-time data is recorded digitally, and key cooling curve parameters are calculated, including Maximum Cooling Rate, Temperature at Maximum Cooling Rate, Cooling Rate at 300 °C, and cooling times to 600 °C, 400 °C, and 200 °C.

ProVaC Advantage

How ProVaC Enables ASTM D6200 Compliance

Every aspect of ASTM D6200 is directly addressed by ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer, Inconel Probes, and ProQuench V3 software.

D6200-01 and D6200-21 Both Supported

ProVaC's Pro-Quenchometer supports both the D6200-01 and D6200-21 revisions. ProQuench software generates reports referencing either version — critical for legacy lab audits.

💧

Water Content Interlock

Water content is a major interference in D6200 testing. ProVaC supplies procedural guidance and water content verification checklists with every instrument — preventing invalid test results.

🏆

CQI-9 Ready

ASTM D6200 is the test method referenced in CQI-9 for quench oil monitoring. ProQuench generates CQI-9 compatible reports with trending charts for your automotive QMS audits.

📑

GeM and Tender Documentation

ASTM D6200 is the most commonly specified standard in Indian GeM portal tenders. ProVaC's compliance certificates and test reports are structured for seamless GeM and government procurement documentation.

🔬

D6200 requires duplicate testing for reproducibility. ProQuench automatically logs duplicate runs, calculates averages, flags outliers, and stores the full audit trail.

Step-by-Step Process

How to Generate a ASTM D6200 Compliant Report

From probe preparation to signed PDF report — a complete ASTM D6200 test run with ProVaC equipment takes under 30 minutes.

01
Inconel Probes

Verify Probe & Check Oil Moisture

Install the NABL-traceable Inconel 600 probe and confirm water content of the oil sample is <0.01% — a mandatory D6200 pre-test check. Water contamination invalidates D6200 results.

02
Pro-Quenchometer

Heat Probe to 850 °C ± 2 °C

The integrated furnace heats the probe to 850 °C ± 2 °C with continuous temperature monitoring. ASTM D6200-21 specifies a tighter ±2 °C tolerance vs. the ±5 °C of ISO 9950.

03
Pro-Quenchometer

Automated Transfer to 2000 mL Oil Bath

ProVaC's automatic transfer mechanism moves the heated probe into the 2000 mL ± 50 mL oil vessel — meeting the D6200 sample volume requirement. Transfer timing is logged automatically.

04
Pro-Quenchometer

Digital Cooling Curve Acquisition

NABL-certified sensors capture the full cooling curve. ProQuench logs the test as one of a required duplicate pair, flagging if duplicate results deviate beyond acceptable reproducibility limits.

05
ProQuench V3 Software

Auto-Calculate D6200 Parameters & Duplicate Average

ProQuench computes all six D6200 parameters, averages duplicate runs, and checks results against Wolfson reference fluid acceptance limits. CQI-9 trending charts are built automatically.

06
ProQuench V3 Software

Generate D6200-21 Report for CQI-9 & GeM

A professional PDF report citing D6200-21 (or D6200-01) is produced — including cooling curve, all parameters, duplicate averages, and trending charts — formatted for CQI-9 automotive audits and GeM procurement submissions.
